AUSTRALIAN ASSISTANCE TO PAKISTAN FOLLOWING DEVASTATING FLOODS

The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Stephen Smith, announced on 2 August that Australia will provide A$5 million in assistance to help the people of Pakistan adversely affected by the devastation and destruction caused by the worst floods to hit Pakistan since 1929.

The Australian Government will provide an immediate $2 million of humanitarian assistance through the United Nations-managed Pakistan Emergency Response Fund and the International Red Cross/Crescent Movement.

An additional $3 million package will be provided to help humanitarian agencies, including Australian Non-Government Organisations, in Pakistan assist with recovery and rebuilding following the disaster.

The A$5 million announced on 2 August is in addition to the more than A$28 million in humanitarian assistance Australia has provided to crisis affected areas in FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since September 2008. It is also in addition to doubling of development assistance to Pakistan to A$120 million over two years, announced by Foreign Minister Smith at the Tokyo Donors Conference in April 2009.
