Statament

3 March 2011

I am shocked and deeply saddened by the assassination of Pakistan's Minister for Minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti.

On behalf of the Australian Government, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, as well as to the people and government of Pakistan.

This cowardly and brutal act is a blow to tolerance and moderation in Pakistan, and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.

As Minister for Minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti worked tirelessly to protect and promote the rights of all minorities in Pakistan, regardless of race or religion. His courageous efforts won the admiration and respect of people in Pakistan and around the world.

The Australian Government joins with the Government of Pakistan in condemning this crime.

We will support Shahbaz Bhatti's vision of a tolerant and peaceful society as we continue to work with Pakistan to address its security and governance challenges.
